[2], [7], [8]

Joël visite New York (Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Iridium, Smalls, Bradley’s), s’inspire des meilleures pratiques, déplace la scène, améliore la sonorisation, embauche le chef Juan Barros et renomme l’endroit Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill. [9]

Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill (Montreal)

Founded in the spring of 1986 by Christopher (Chris) Gore, and famous for its upside-down sign, Upstairs — after four relocations — is now the oldest jazz club still operating in Montreal. Since 1995, Joël Giberovitch (with his father Sydney) has elevated the venue to the status of an institution, blending attentive listening, refined cuisine, and international-calibre programming. [1], [7], [11]

1. Origins (1986) & bohemian spirit

The first incarnation was born at 1187 Bishop Street (above the Charles Darwin pub) — hence the name Upstairs. Founded by Chris Gore, it was a small, peaceful bar where board games (chess, backgammon, darts, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit) coexisted with live jazz. The jam sessions quickly attracted musicians and night owls; admission was often free, food and drinks inexpensive, and the venue filled with smoke, as was customary at the time. [1], [11]

“Upstairs didn’t have its own bathroom — you had to go down to Darwin’s, and many customers stayed downstairs!” — Al Paterson [3]

2. Moves & the upside-down sign

Six months after opening, the lease was cancelled — Upstairs moved to 1429 Bishop (basement). The concept remained: restaurant-bar, games & jazz. [4]

The upside-down sign was born here: “People were looking upstairs for the entrance. I told Chris to flip the sign to show it was downstairs… and it stuck!” — Al Paterson. [2]

In 1990, a 3rd address at 1421 Bishop, but with permit constraints and a high rent. Chris’s bohemian vision (little business focus, no cover charge, free-flowing vibe) was charming but fragile long-term. [5], [11]

3. MacKay (1994–) & relaunch (1995–)

Luck turned: Chris found 1254 MacKay Street, an affordable space with a full bar licence (4th incarnation, from 1994). In 1995, Joël Giberovitch (age 23) and his father Sydney took over the lease and began a major relaunch. [2], [7], [8]

Joël visited New York (Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Iridium, Smalls, Bradley’s), studied best practices, moved the stage, upgraded sound, hired chef Juan Barros, and rebranded the venue as Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill. [9]

Milestones: 2009, tribute to Len Dobbin, Montreal jazz legend and pillar of Upstairs; 2015, acquisition of a Steinway Model B for the 20th anniversary of the relaunch. [10], [7]

4. Programming & room policy

Upstairs highlights an eclectic range of jazz (mainstream, post-bop, vocal, soul jazz, blues) and supports emerging musicians (notably through collaborations with McGill University). A listening-room policy encourages attentive audiences — a key shift from the club’s original “bohemian” spirit. [9]

5. Atmosphere & design (MacKay)

Warm semi-basement, stone and brick walls, mahogany woodwork, a ten-seat bar facing the stage, classic record sleeves (Miles, Trane, Louis), “ragtime” sculptures, glowing aquarium. Close proximity between stage and audience invites conversation with musicians between sets. [6]

6. Artists & community

Upstairs welcomes leading musicians and serves as a springboard for emerging artists. Frequently associated with the club: Ranee Lee, Oliver Jones, Jim & Chet Doxas, Guillaume Martineau, and many more. [6], [9]

“Instead of a trip to Europe, I stocked the bar and fridges and relaunched the club.” — Joël Giberovitch [7]

Live video: concert at Upstairs.
