EXHIBIT A (Montreal)

1. Overview

EXHIBIT A appeared on Montreal’s cultural landscape in the summer of 2026. Located at 4981 Dunn Avenue, the venue was conceived as a small-capacity space primarily intended for concerts and independent artistic activities. ^[1]

The establishment does not present itself as a traditional concert venue. Its identity instead rests on a community-based, DIY approach to cultural presentation: a neighbourhood space capable of hosting local and touring bands, art events and various initiatives emerging from alternative scenes.

The venue is located near the Lachine Canal bike path. In its opening announcement, IFO specifically emphasized this location and its intention to provide a new gathering place for Montreal’s punk, rock and underground communities. ^[1]

2. IFO and the Creation of EXHIBIT A

EXHIBIT A was created by IFO, an organization associated with independent events and Montreal DIY culture. When announcing the new venue, IFO described it both as its headquarters and as a space intended for the wider community. ^[1]

This dual function is important to understanding the nature of the venue. EXHIBIT A is not simply a place where shows are presented: it also provides a base from which different cultural activities can be organized, prepared and supported.

The announcement also described EXHIBIT A as a “new venue for subcultural exploits”, a phrase that captures its intended spirit: an independent and flexible space for cultural forms that often develop outside traditional commercial circuits. ^[1]

3. Opening Night — July 11, 2026

EXHIBIT A officially opened on Saturday, July 11, 2026. The event was announced as New Venue Party: EXHIBIT A!! and represents the first documented public event held at the new space. ^{[1], [2]}

Rather than presenting a conventional concert for its first night, IFO organized a community celebration featuring a rooftop BBQ, a dance party with DJ SEANKRUSHER and karaoke. The event was free and advertised as BYOB. ^[1]

The invitation explicitly called on “punks, rockers, freaks, and friends”, immediately identifying the cultural community around which EXHIBIT A intended to develop.

4. A Small Space for the Community

EXHIBIT A has an announced capacity of approximately 70 people. The event space is located on the ground floor and was described by IFO as accessible. ^[1]

Its small capacity directly contributes to the character of the venue. EXHIBIT A belongs to a tradition of spaces where the distance between performers, organizers and audiences is kept to a minimum. Its operation depends less on the infrastructure of a commercial concert hall than on proximity and community participation.

From the outset, IFO also announced plans to assemble an in-house backline. The organization asked the community for equipment that could be loaned, shared or sold to the new venue. ^[1]

5. The First Concerts

Only a few days after its inauguration, EXHIBIT A began hosting a regular concert program. On July 18, 2026, DEADBOLT, WEAKNESS and MANTRACKER were among the acts announced at the venue. ^[2]

On July 24, the venue hosted CAUSE OF DEATH from North Carolina and ANNAPURA from Mexico City. The event was advertised with flexible admission and the designation NOTAFLOF — “No One Turned Away For Lack Of Funds” — a practice used within some DIY networks to keep shows financially accessible. ^[3]

During August, the programming continued to reflect local and international punk and hardcore networks. On August 5, 2026, IFO presented CELL ROT from San Francisco with VERIFY and TRENCHCOAT. ^[4]

On August 12, EXHIBIT A hosted TORPOR, BASTARD IDOL, PEARL and CASCADES. The show was advertised as all ages, BYOB and by voluntary contribution, all characteristics associated with the venue’s DIY culture. ^[5]

On August 22, Dutch punk band NEUROOT appeared with Montreal bands HOOD RATS and BACK TO DIE, illustrating the role a small independent venue can play in providing Montreal dates for international touring bands. ^[6]

6. 4981 Dunn Avenue Before EXHIBIT A

EXHIBIT A’s cultural history begins in 2026, but 4981 Dunn Avenue naturally has a history predating the venue. Currently available records show that the address was associated for several years with Le Paysagiste C.B.L. inc., a landscaping and construction business. ^[7]

A contractor’s licence issued by Quebec’s Régie du bâtiment in November 2015 lists 4981 Dunn Avenue as the company’s business address. Professional directories also associate Le Paysagiste C.B.L. with this address. ^{[7], [8]}

These records establish commercial use of the address before the arrival of EXHIBIT A, but they do not, by themselves, establish with certainty whether the specific space occupied by the venue in 2026 corresponds exactly to the premises formerly used by that business. The detailed history of the building and its various occupants therefore remains to be documented.

7. EXHIBIT A and Montreal DIY Culture

It is still too early to assess the historical significance of EXHIBIT A. At the time of its opening in 2026, however, the venue represented a new example of a longstanding phenomenon in Montreal music history: the creation of small independent spaces where emerging and underground scenes can establish their own places to perform and gather.

Such venues can be modest, short-lived and sometimes poorly documented. Yet they play a particular role in a city’s musical ecosystem. They allow new bands to perform, provide smaller international touring acts with a Montreal stop, and give independent promoters a place to present events outside the established network of larger venues.

EXHIBIT A also illustrates the continuing presence of Montreal DIY punk culture. Its capacity of approximately 70 people, community-oriented operation, all-ages events, flexible admission policies and combination of local and international bands reflect an approach in which the venue functions as both a social space and a place for live music.

Its story, however, is only beginning. Unlike vanished venues whose histories must be reconstructed from surviving archives, EXHIBIT A offers the opportunity to document the birth and evolution of a new Montreal cultural space almost in real time. The posters, flyers and other materials produced around its events therefore constitute the first traces of a history still being written.
